Plastic Bags Project Oddly enough I've found that a plastic bag is a perfect signifier for many layers of dialogue and metaphor. What is a plastic bag? A mass-produced and entirely disposable, utilitarian product designed to hold or carry things. It is estimated that between 500 billon and a trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide each year, so common are these items, so disposable that they come in and out of our lives with out the slightest notice. Only to be discarded or reused for some other purpose. Cast in this light, I am attempting to re-contextualize them into something greater, to elevate them from the mundane and transform them into objects of grace with meaning and power. I am working from form and function, reworking its identity into something abstract and evocative. Like a Rorschach it is a playground for the mind, a place where the viewer is encouraged to explore. Like the work I have done in the past I have created an environment and process which asks questions as well as provides information, yet in this work I give no answers but merely allow the work to reflect for each his own questions of meaning and importance steeped in the rich layers of dialogue provided by the work.
